1. What exactly are Haiti Missions?
A. Every year, Hillside Wesleyan Church, 50 Ritcey Cres and 80 Chameau Cres sends a team of parishioners (roughly 6-8 people) to Port Au Prince Haiti in the city of Babaco and La Gonave, Haiti. While there, they help in various ways, such as helping to rebuild/repair, teach life skills, construct buildings, serve in the feeding program, serve in the schools, build places of worship, build relationships and build Leaders among the community. Sandy Wheeler has started a program titled "Sew Hopeful" which teaches Haitian men and women to sew garments to sell and teaches them how to create a small business with skills for financial empowerment.
2. Where and how are the finisher medals made?
A. The medals are hand made by Haitian Artisans who work at Papillon Marketplace - http://papillon-enterprise.com/how-its-made/
They are made from 55 gal oil drums. Please review the website to see how they are made.
Papillon is an organization focused on providing employment to Haitian Artisans so they can be empowered and self sufficient to provide for their families.
3. Is this a flat course?
A. No. There are some challenging parts, but for the most part it is very doable, everyone from first time racer to seasoned marathoner will find it a fun and exhilarating race :-) It's more challenging that a typical road race due to the fact it incorporates a portion of trail, but not near as difficult as say The Bluenose 5k nor the Run or Dye 5k. If you have participated in any of those races, you will find this one easy! :)
4. If I pay the registration fee, do I still have to collect pledges?
A. No. The pledge form is available if you would like to collect pledges you may.
5. Is his a timed event.
A. YES!! Timing services to be provided by Atlantic Chip!
6. What is included with the registration fee?
A. Included is Race T, Finishers Medal and post race pancake breakfast at Hillside Wesleyan Church on Chameau Cres., Cole Harbour.
7. I'm Not a runner, can I still participate?
A. Well, this question needs to be broken down into parts. 1. Everyone is a runner. You are either an untrained runner, an injured runner or a runner who prefers to walk. Everyone is a runner. I have yet to be unsuccessful at training anyone to run a 5k. I have been training runners for 3 years. I follow the Couch 2 5k APP that is available on the training tips page. If you have a condition that prevents you from running, then you are an injured runner. Still a runner, just unable to do so at the moment. We are all runners. We were born runners. Some of us runners just prefer to walk. That's ok too. You are more than welcome to walk the 5k. Trust me, you won't be alone. A whole lot of us runners prefer to walk :) If you would like to be one of our volunteers, please contact us at [email protected].
8. How deeply rooted is this race in the whole "Christian thing?"
A. Well this one is a bit harder to answer. Matter of fact, I was stumped. I was prepared for a whole slew of questions, but I never thought of this one so thanks so much for asking! What I can say is that I'm Wesleyan. This race is being put on to support missions work that is being done by Hillside Wesleyan Church. Do YOU have to be wesleyan to come out? No. Do YOU have to have faith to run? No. Will we be sprinkling you at water stops instead of handing you water? No. haha! Ok, that was a joke. The long and short of it is this. I wouldn't have had the idea to put on the race if God hadn't have prodded me with it. I wouldn't be organizing a race at all if I didn't believe in the important work that our Mission Team does in Haiti. So yes, we are deeply rooted in the whole "Christian Thing", but you don't have to have faith to join us and we won't be trying to convert you while you are there. All you have to do is love to run and love to help others in need. :)
9. Does this race only support international initiatives or are you doing anything locally?
A. Hillside Wesleyan Church also believes that in order to be a healthy Church we also must support those in need close to home. We have numerous charities we support, Check out their website and click on Hope Investment. Under there you will find a list of the local support we provide. At the race we will also be gladly accepting food donations to support Demetrius Lane Food Bank.
10. Is this race also open to walkers?
A, Of course! Please, come walk or run with us!
11. Are we allowed pets?
A. Yes! You can certainly bring your dog, just remember, The Salt Marsh Trail is an ON LEASH area and all dogs must be on leash and are the sole responsibility of their owner.
12. Where do we pick up our race kits?
A. There will be two opportunities to pick up your race kit.
- Early race kit pickup is TBD, 2021
- TBD, 2021 - at Hillside Wesleyan, Parkway Campus, 80 Chameau Cres, Dartmouth, NS B2W 6J1
